Playing chase with a butterfly.
Instead of going to the park today, my class found a butterfly who wanted to play.
After being in our classroom for three hours because of a muggy rain, we were able to g0 outside. Before every walk, I remind the kids to look for beautiful things in nature.
Our walk usually ends up as a race to the park, with me screaming for them to slow down.
But, today a little boy shouted to the class, “look I see a butterfly.”
Suddenly the butterfly was circling around his head. Then it flew away, within a few seconds it was back. The butterfly did this a few more times. Within a few moments, my class was playing chase with a butterfly.
All the kids were screaming with excitement over the butterfly appearing and disappearing.
Before I knew it, the little yellow butterfly, that we now named Nemo had my class running and chasing him.
This game of chase went on for at least 30 minutes. Every time they thought Nemo was gone, he swooped in and started the game again.
Nature was alive right before their eyes.
I watched as they ran back and forth, trying to keep up with something so small and delicate. They were out of breath but it never stopped them from laughing and chasing.
When it was time to go, Nemo flew away.
We walked back to class and they could not stop talking about the butterfly they played chase with.
Each day is a new day for our kids to find a new adventure to explore and discover.
Taking a class full of kids sometimes on a walk is an adventure itself. I know that if I would have missed our walk today there would have been a butterfly who would not have been able to play today. I am so thankful for this beautiful day.
