Edelweiss

When my son was younger he watched the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins more times than I can remember.

Without even seeing the television I could picture each scene in my mind as each song was played. These movies brought joy, hope and love.

When my son discovered that Maria and Mary Poppins were the same person he was mortified. He tried to convince me they were not.

The true realization for my son came in middle school when he found out that his best friend’s grandma was Julie Andrews… AKA Maria and Mary Poppins.

Our children have a short time to live in the fantasy of, “A spoon full of sugar” and “The hills are alive with the sound of music”.

They sing to the songs of movies that made generations laugh and cry. They dance with characters that became their friends. They wish for the life of the Von Trapp and Banks families

Our fictional heroes are a big part of childhood. When we turn on the television and catch our favorite shows it brings us back to the first time we watched it, where we were and how it made us feel.

When I heard the news that Christopher Plummer/Captain Von Trap had passed away I was brought back to memories of my son dancing to Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. To the joy that these movies brought to him and I am so thankful. RIP Captain.

  1. Julie Andrews is like Betty White, we hope she lives forever. The Sound of Music is my favorite movie and I was sad to hear of Christopher’s passing away just like you. Must be nice to have a best friend whose grandmother is Julie Andrews though!

    1. Some movies are so timeless and bring you back such happy moments. May the hills always be alive with the sound of music!
