Down the street from where I grew up was a small children’s book store. On the weekends they had events like author readings, puppet shows, musical performances, etc.

The owners made everyone feel like they were family. When my son was born, this book store became like a second home.

What made the store so special was not only how they treated their customers but their knowledge.  They knew about the different authors, book content, and could recommend the perfect book. I could walk in and ask for a specific topic and they knew exactly what I was looking for.

When my son went through a rainbow phase we asked for a book about rainbows. They came back with the perfect book, “A Rainbow Of My Own” twenty years later this book is still one of my class’s favorites.

A book can change your life.  A story can bring alive emotions and feelings through its words. Your imagination can go to places where there are no limits.

A children’s book can bring as much meaning to an adult as it can to a child.  It is all how we look at the story.

Children learn to love reading by being surrounded by books.  My son and I  would spend hours turning pages and enjoying our storytime.

When my little book store shut its doors for the last time, a chapter of my heart closed hard.  I am thankful for everything I learned from the people who worked there about the way a book should be read, loved, and appreciated.

My love of children’s books only continues to grow stronger. As a teacher, I will pass on the love of adventure, imagination, and reading, one book at a time.
